When the universe comes to get you

There are abductions with white light, grey Martians and awkward questions. This one smelled of hot cable and expensive cologne.

Me abdujo el universo wins on its title alone: Tamar doesn’t accuse a ship. The one responsible is the entire universe. There’s no police station to report it to, and it has probably filled in the collection form wrong.

The cover shows Tamar suspended over a volcanic landscape in reds and blues. It also works as a metaphor: there are ideas, obsessions and songs able to yank you out of your routine with the force of a tractor beam.

It wasn’t a getaway. It was the cosmos knocking at the door and taking the frame as well.

A brutal change of perspective

From the ground, problems take up the whole screen. From above, the street becomes a line, the car a dot and yesterday’s argument a tiny bit of interference. What’s happening doesn’t disappear, but its size changes.

A rocky landscape can be an alien base. A studio can hide inside a saucer. Any given night can be the date the solar system loses the beat.

Tale: the aliens had lost the beat

The abduction happened on a Tuesday because on Tuesdays no one expects anything important. The clouds went backwards, a stone returned to the crag on its own and a bird flew in reverse with visible indignation.

Up there were no stretchers. There was a gigantic studio. The panels looked like turntables; little planets spun like vinyl and several moons served as volume controls.

Three aliens in black suits waited behind a transparent table. The one in the middle wore sunglasses, though it had no visible eyes.

Saturn kept rushing ahead. Mars refused to follow instructions. Mercury sent eleven-minute voice notes. A black hole insisted on having a solo. Two galaxies were about to collide before the chorus.

Tamar plugged in Earth. In came blinds coming down, an old Toyota starting up, cutlery in a kitchen, footsteps on gravel and wind from a ravine. The universe stopped seeming like a perfect machine and started nodding its head.

Temporal remix to get back home

As payment they offered Tamar a planet. He asked to go back. The wait was three working centuries, but on the console there was a red button: TEMPORAL REMIX.

He woke up on the rock seven minutes later, with a transparent vinyl in his pocket. Every time someone listens to it, a star quietly changes place.

The song opens a door without deciding what’s on the other side. The abduction can be an adventure, a transformation or a magnificent excuse for arriving late.

Listen to it looking up. If a star changes place, there’s no need to warn anyone: it was probably in the mix.
